The Malcolm Baldrige criteria for excellence was modified in 2002 to include aspects related to corporate governance (CG), such as management accountability, fiscal accountability, independence of audits and stakeholder focus. TQMS developed independent criteria for the CG assessment and these were used in a pilot assessment of two companies in 2004-05. Based on these pilot assessments, a two-stage CG assessment process was rolled out in 2006 as a part oftheTBEM assessment.

Ten large-sized Tata companies were assessed by the TBEM assessment team both at a management level and at the Board level. These findings were reviewed by an expert committee and compiled into company-wise reports as well as a Group level study insight.

TQMS will assess a batch of 12-15 companies in FY 09. There are plans to integrate the CG assessment with the TBEM assessment in 2009.
